U.S. President Donald Trump on the night of October 13 on board Air Force One stated that if Russia does not stop its aggression against Ukraine by peaceful means, American Tomahawk cruise missiles may be delivered to Kyiv. According to him, this measure’s purpose is not victory, but may be a rapid and powerful “heavy measure” as a warning.
Trump said that on October 11 and 12 he discussed this issue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and warned that this possible step could be considered “a new phase of aggression.” The President added: “Maybe we should talk to the Russians about Tomahawk. Do they want such weapons to be used? I do not think so.”
Trump also emphasized that he intends to warn Russian President Vladimir Putin of this possibility and said that if necessary there is an option to deliver the missiles not directly to Ukraine but by selling them to NATO countries that are able to give them to Kyiv.
He described the Tomahawks as “offensive and intimidating weapons,” and stressed that they could put very great pressure on Russia.
It should be noted that such comments can have serious consequences at the level of global politics.
Decisions by the U.S. and NATO about any arms assistance or their consequences are assessed carefully from diplomatic, military and legal standpoints. Donald Trump views this option as a tougher signal short of military action.
