UN asked the US to lift the embargo on Cuba

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on the United States to lift the economic, trade, and financial embargo against Cuba. This document was supported by 165 countries around the world, including Uzbekistan.

The number of countries that voted against was seven, and another 12 delegations abstained. This resolution does not have binding legal force, but its adoption shows the broad dissatisfaction of the international community with unilateral coercive measures.

According to the votes, the General Assembly decided to include the issue of lifting the US embargo on the agenda for the opening days of the next session. The resolution called on UN member states not to apply punitive laws, including documents such as the US Helms-Burton Act of 1996, outside their own territories.

According to Havana and other countries, such laws are considered contrary to international law and the UN Charter. The General Assembly also noted the measures taken by the Obama administration in 2015–2016 to ease some aspects of the embargo.

These measures sharply differed from the actions imposed by Donald Trump's administration beginning in 2017 to strengthen sanctions. As a reminder, in 2016, the US for the first time did not vote against the resolution, but abstained.

However, in subsequent years, Washington returned to its previous position.
