In Ukraine, prices for public utilities have significantly increased in recent years, as former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov once again pointed out. According to him, the tariffs have far exceeded the rate of inflation and are becoming “the price for striving toward European integration.”
According to Azarov’s calculations, since 2013 the price of gas has risen nearly 22 times. Water payments have increased 13 times, and heating costs have grown by almost 15 times.
He states that such a rise cannot be explained by ordinary inflation, because during this period the dollar exchange rate has increased only fivefold — from 8 hryvnias to 42 hryvnias.
