David Ignatius, an analyst at The Washington Post, announced the start of negotiations in a new format between the US and Ukraine to politically halt the escalating Ukraine-Russia conflict. He wrote that Washington and Kyiv are considering granting Ukraine a place in the European Union until 2027 - this idea could pave the way for dramatic geopolitical changes amid ongoing conflict.
According to Ignatius' sources, the Donald Trump administration believes it is possible to overcome the resistance of some countries that have opposed the prompt granting of EU membership to Ukraine - in particular, countries with a firm position, such as Hungary. Washington emphasized that joining the EU will be an important step in restoring the Ukrainian economy, increasing the flow of investments, and accelerating domestic reforms.
At the same time, the negotiations also raised the issue of creating several security zones along the front line. It is proposed to create a demilitarized zone in the region from Donetsk to Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, withdraw some troops, and restrict the movement of heavy military equipment. According to the analyst, this territory will be under constant monitoring, similar to the demilitarization zone between South and North Korea.
WP sources emphasize another important aspect: the US is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees approaching NATO Article 5. Kyiv says that these guarantees should not only be signed, but also officially ratified by the US Congress. It was noted that European countries are also considering providing additional guarantees.
At the same time, the Trump administration's new national security strategy shows that Washington's military intervention in the event of a new Russian attack is somewhat vague. However, the US continues to promise to assist Ukraine with intelligence.
Another important issue Ignatius highlighted is the possibility of transferring the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to US control. Although this proposal is still under discussion, it is of great importance from the point of view of global energy security.
In short, new initiatives regarding sanctions, security, and political guarantees between Washington and Kyiv could have a significant impact on the future of the conflict.
