Putin focused on demography and family issues

On December 19, a final direct line and major press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Moscow. During the discussion, which lasted about 4.5 hours, the head of state answered questions from citizens and media representatives, addressing important issues of public concern. Demography and family values were among the key topics highlighted.

The president noted that population decline has become a common problem for almost all post-industrial countries. Similar trends are observed in major economies as well. In some states, the situation is truly alarming. For example, Japan’s birth rate stands at around 0.8, while South Korea’s is about 0.7. In Russia, the figure has also declined and is currently at approximately 1.4. According to Putin, the country needs to reach at least a level of 2, although this is an extremely difficult task.

The head of state also explained the reasons behind this trend. He said that in modern society many women first seek education, then further professional development, and only later take their first steps toward building a career. As a result, the first child is often born after the age of 30, when women are already physically and emotionally exhausted. Putin stressed that having children, as well as the happiness of motherhood and fatherhood, should become a social value and even a “trend,” so people can truly understand what happiness means.

During the press conference, Putin also commented on the topic of love at the age of 15 and early marriage. He cited the traditions of the peoples of the Caucasus, where marrying at a young age is common, calling it a correct and worthy example. He also mentioned the large family of Ramzan Kadyrov, noting that early marriage is a respected tradition in their culture.

At the same time, Putin acknowledged that young families face many challenges. Nevertheless, he emphasized that fundamental issues such as starting a family and having children should not be postponed for too long. In his view, these decisions are crucial for ensuring a stable future for society and maintaining demographic balance.
