Cambodia-Thailand conflict: about 500,000 people left their homes

According to the Cambodian press agency, nearly 500,000 people were forced to leave their homes due to the escalation of the border conflict with Thailand. Most of them are women and children.

The agency reported that in 14 provinces, a total of 498,200 people were evacuated. Eighteen civilians were killed and 78 were injured. In the December clashes, 73 residential buildings, several religious sites, and city and road infrastructure were damaged.

During the clashes that began on December 7, Cambodian and Thai forces targeted each other’s border positions. The Cambodian Ministry of Defense said Thai forces carried out threatening actions on the border, while the Thai army said it carried out retaliatory strikes on Cambodian positions.

On December 12, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia agreed to stop all shootings. However, the next day Thai officials said they were ready to continue fighting. The situation in the region remains tense.
