Japan restarts largest nuclear plant

Japan, 15 years after the Fukushima disaster, has allowed the restart of the largest nuclear power plant – the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa reactor. The plant is located 220 km northwest of Tokyo and was closed after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The Niigata prefecture assembly approved the restart. On that day, about 300 people in the prefecture protested with slogans “No Nukes” and “Support Fukushima.” Most residents are concerned about the plant’s safety.

TEPCO plans to restart the first reactor on January 20, 2026. The company promised to invest 100 billion yen (641 million dollars) over the next 10 years to gain local support, but many residents remain skeptical.

Japan plans to increase the share of nuclear power to 20% by 2040 to strengthen energy security and reduce imported fuel costs. Experts say the restart is an important step in the country’s energy strategy.
