Heavy rain in California caused floods and mudslides. As of Christmas night, three people died. Rain brought up to 27 centimeters in Los Angeles and southern counties, evacuations began and roads were closed.

Emergency services rescued several people, including those trapped in vehicles. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and other counties. About 100,000 people were without power.

Among the dead were a 64-year-old man in San Diego killed by a fallen tree, a 74-year-old in Redding trapped in a vehicle by flood waters, and a 70-year-old woman in Mendocino County swept into the sea by a wave.

Evacuation warnings were issued in San Bernardino County, and flash flood warnings around the San Francisco Bay. Los Angeles Mayor urged residents to be careful on the roads and take the rain seriously.
