China takes strict measures against U.S. companies over arms sales to Taiwan

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced sanctions on 10 individuals and 20 U.S. defense companies, including Boeing’s St. Louis branch, due to arms sales to Taiwan. The sanctions freeze the companies’ and individuals’ assets in China and prevent local organizations and citizens from doing business with them.

The list of sanctioned individuals includes the founder of Anduril Industries and nine executives from the companies. They are also banned from entering China.

These measures followed the U.S. announcement of $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, the largest package ever offered to the island. A Chinese official stated that Taiwan is “the core of China’s core interests” and warned that any action crossing this line will face a strong response.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory, but the capital of Taiwan rejects this claim. The U.S. is legally required to provide Taiwan with means to defend itself, but these restrictions remain a source of tension in China-U.S. relations.
