Miracle in New Zealand: Dolphins Protected People

Dolphins saved a swimmer and his daughter from an attack by a massive great white shark.

British swimmer Rob How encountered an astonishing incident while swimming with his daughter off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island. A calm swim turned into a thrilling rescue operation in an instant.

Suddenly, a pod of dolphins appeared, formed a tight circle around the father and daughter, and began herding them toward the center. Rob tried several times to break out of the ring, but two dolphins repeatedly pushed him back. It was as if they were protecting the people from an unseen danger.

Soon the reason became clear: a massive great white shark, about three meters long, was approaching the area. At that moment, the dolphins’ behavior changed sharply. They slapped the water with their tails and, with fast, coordinated movements, tried to scare the shark away and drive it off.

For nearly forty minutes, the dolphins maintained a protective ring around Rob and his daughter. Until the shark retreated, they did not allow the people to leave. Only after the danger had passed did the dolphins open a path and let the father and daughter reach the shore.

A lifeguard and several witnesses on the beach watched the incident. The event added another piece of evidence to the history of rare dolphin behavior in protecting humans from shark attacks.
