Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a detailed statement following talks with US President Donald Trump in Florida on December 29th. According to the head of state, during the meeting, the Washington side clearly confirmed its support for strong and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy emphasized that all key aspects of security issues were previously developed by technical and negotiation groups, and Trump approved them. It was also confirmed that these agreements will be submitted for consideration by the US Congress. The Ukrainian leader assessed this as a "very strong and historically significant agreement."
The issue of Ukraine's post-war economic recovery was also discussed separately during the negotiations. According to the plans, special conditions will be created for US businesses aimed at participating in the reconstruction and development of Ukraine. At the same time, the issue of starting work on the free trade agreement between the two countries is also on the agenda.
Regarding security guarantees, the parties agreed on a 15-year mechanism. However, Zelenskyy stated that he proposed extending this period further, even considering a 30-50 year format. In his opinion, such a decision could be a historic step for Donald Trump. The US President expressed his readiness to consider this matter.
Further political steps were also outlined during the negotiations. A meeting at the level of national security advisors from the United States and European countries is planned in the coming days. This meeting could take place in Ukraine. Once all the documents are ready, the European leaders will first hold broad-format talks with Ukraine, and then begin preparations for a meeting with Trump.
Zelenskyy emphasized that if the process progresses gradually, there is a possibility of holding a meeting with Russia in a certain format later. The Ukrainian side reiterated its readiness for such negotiations.
The Ukrainian president also emphasized the need to hold a referendum to approve a 20-point peace plan in the country. However, such a vote requires a ceasefire regime of at least 60 days. Zelenskyy said that Russia does not agree to this proposal and prefers to continue military pressure.
The Ukrainian leader assessed the situation as very complex and noted that the country, together with the international community, continues to fight for peace.
