After the meeting in Washington, Colombia's president Gustavo Petro gave a sharp and clear signal: he told Donald Trump that he had provided a list of drug barons who live outside the republic and manage drug trafficking. Petro emphasized that the fight against such a "transnational network" will be effective not only through the efforts of one state, but also through international cooperation.
According to him, the largest "share" in drug trafficking is held by figures who live and work abroad, not in Colombia itself. Petro specifically mentioned three destinations: Dubai, Madrid, and Miami.
"The first place in the drug trade is occupied by residents of Dubai, Madrid, and Miami. I handed over their names and their associates to President Trump. Their money is outside Colombia - therefore, it is necessary to pursue it jointly with intelligence agencies of different countries," Petro said at a press conference.
According to the president, the most correct way to achieve a "great victory" is to first seize the leaders who manage the industry. He acknowledged that Colombians were among those who were at the top of the criminal groups, but also emphasized that they did not constitute the main part. That is, Petro's idea is singular: the problem must be global - and the solution must also be global.
For context, Petro and Trump held talks at the White House on February 3rd. Following the meeting, Trump stated that an agreement had been reached on cooperation in combating drug trafficking.
In short, Petro's position is firm: drug trafficking will replace, but not disappear, if we don't drive out "big heads" who make decisions and money, not "small executives."
