Washington may arm Iraqi Kurds against Iran

Reports have emerged that secret negotiations are underway between Kurdish militants based in Iraq and Washington regarding the fight against the Iranian government. US officials are considering the possibility of supporting these armed groups and providing them with weapons with the aim of overthrowing the Iranian leadership. Reports semafor.com.
The Iranian side, for its part, responded by striking Kurdish opposition headquarters in Iraq. Official Tehran views the rapprochement between Kurdish groups and the US as a threat to its national security. Kurds make up about one-tenth of Iran's population and have historically been active in political processes in the region.
Kurdish leaders emphasize that there has been no direct invasion of Iranian territory so far. However, international analysts call this strategy extremely dangerous. According to an Iranian-American historian, such an approach could trigger a civil war in the region and further complicate the situation.
This US move is reminiscent of tactics used in past conflicts in Syria and Iraq. At that time, Washington also formed alliances with local Kurdish groups to fight against government forces. In the current situation, the tension with Iran could be the beginning of new geopolitical games.
