Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei takes oath

A solemn oath-taking ceremony for Iran's new supreme leader, Mujtaba Khamenei, was held in Tehran. This event followed the death of former leader Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2025, as a result of Israeli and US strikes. Footage shown by state media shows residents in many cities carrying portraits of the new leader and his father.

56-year-old Mujtaba Khamenei is a Shia cleric. He is known as a figure with close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to foreign media reports, it was this military structure that insisted on his son coming to power after Ali Khamenei's death. In the Iranian system, the supreme leader sets the country's strategic directions and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reports directly to him.

Against the backdrop of the situation in the region, Lebanon's "Hezbollah" movement also issued a statement. They confirmed their loyalty to Iran's new leadership and wished Mujtaba Khamenei success in his state governance. Although the supreme leader in the Iranian political system does not directly interfere in daily state affairs, he is the person who makes the main decisions in the country's domestic and foreign policy.
