Iran says Natanz faced new attack

Iran said the United States and Israel carried out a new strike on its uranium enrichment complex in Natanz on March 21, according to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. US and Israeli officials did not immediately comment on the claim. Iranian authorities said a technical review found no leak of radioactive materials and no danger to people living near the site. Iran’s nuclear agency called the strike a violation of international law and obligations, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Tehran said it had informed the International Atomic Energy Agency about the attack. The IAEA said no increase in radiation levels had been detected outside the facility and that it was reviewing the report.

The Natanz complex, located in Isfahan province about 250 kilometers south of Tehran, is Iran’s best-known nuclear site. It includes both above-ground and underground enrichment facilities and more than 10,000 centrifuges. The IAEA has previously said uranium at Natanz had been enriched to 60 percent, far above the 3 to 5 percent usually needed for nuclear power, though still below the roughly 90 percent associated with weapons-grade material.

The site was also hit during US strikes in the summer of 2025, when above-ground centrifuges were reportedly destroyed. It remained unclear at the time whether underground sections were damaged. The latest reported attack comes amid a wider regional conflict that has expanded since late February, with Iran and its adversaries exchanging strikes across the Middle East.
