Russia agrees to pay compensation for AZAL passenger plane crash

Russia and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement regarding compensation for the crash of an AZAL passenger plane that occurred in December 2024. The accident, which killed 38 people, happened after Russian air defenses accidentally shot down the aircraft near Aktobe, Kazakhstan. While the specific terms of the settlement remain confidential, both nations view the deal as a vital step toward restoring diplomatic relations and strengthening their alliance.
The Foreign Ministries of Azerbaijan and Russia issued a joint statement, announcing that an agreement had been reached on the main issues regarding the crash of an AZAL passenger plane that occurred in December 2024.
According to the statement, the consequences of the tragedy, including issues related to compensation payments, have been settled. However, the parties did not disclose the detailed terms of the agreement.
The two countries assessed this decision as an important step towards further strengthening mutual cooperation and allied ties.
Recall that on December 25, 2024, an AZAL airline Embraer E190 plane flying on the Baku-Grozny route crashed near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan. 38 people died in the incident, while 29 passengers survived.
Russian President Vladimir Putin later admitted that the plane was accidentally shot down by Russian air defenses, a development that has led to a diplomatic thaw between Moscow and Baku.
