A 20-year-old American blogger is sharing her story of how she went blind. During a vacation in the Dominican Republic, Grace showered without removing her contact lenses. A week after returning to America, she lost her sight.
According to the girl, doctors initially misdiagnosed her and prescribed eye drops. This exacerbated a dangerous amoeba that had become trapped between her lens and her eye.
Diagnosed with Acanthamoeba, Grace is now trying to restore her vision. During her shower in the Dominican Republic, tiny microorganisms attached to her cornea. Because the lens trapped moisture, the infection easily eroded the cornea.
Grace, who has lost her vision, now has gray-tinted pupils. This is a sign of total blindness.
Experts recommend removing contact lenses before showering, swimming, or using a sauna, avoiding sleeping in them, and cleaning them only with specialized solutions.
