Famous "Bin Laden" of Turkmenistan dies in prison

Rasul Gulmamedov, a prisoner known in the Turkmen criminal world by the nickname "Bin Laden," has died. This was reported by the publication "Chronicles of Turkmenistan."
It is reported that he passed away on April 10 at the AH-E/3 special regime colony located in the Ovadan-Depe area. Gulmamedov was just a few weeks away from celebrating his 55th birthday. According to preliminary information, his death was caused by a heart attack.
Rasul Gulmamedov derived his famous nickname from Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda and an internationally known terrorist. In the mid-nineties, Turkmen law enforcement agencies discovered a large quantity of narcotics and a cache of weapons at his home. It was reported that these included automatic rifles, machine guns, and even an armored vehicle hidden in a pit in his yard and covered with straw.
According to reports, he purchased most of these weapons and equipment from Soviet military personnel leaving Afghanistan in 1989 or exchanged them for drugs. At the same time, some sources suggest that the information about the armored personnel carrier might have been fabricated by security forces to make the case more sensational.
Nevertheless, at that time, "Bin Laden" managed to hide from law enforcement and flee to one of the former USSR countries. However, in 2001, for unknown reasons, he returned to Turkmenistan and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Since then, he never regained his freedom. Gulmamedov served at least three consecutive terms in the Ovadan-Depe prison.
According to the publication, he was among the prisoners who refused to obey prison rules and did not participate in official work. The prison administration was also cautious about pressuring him, as it was feared he could rally hundreds of prisoners belonging to his Baluch ethnic group and cause unrest.
For this reason, it is noted that he was granted relatively privileged conditions, including living in a separate cell with a servant, having numerous visits, and the right to receive food parcels.
