SEC's "Crypto Mom" Hester Peirce to conclude her tenure at the regulator

SEC's

Hester Peirce, a commissioner at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) known as "Crypto Mom" for her stance on the cryptocurrency industry, is stepping down to join the faculty of Regent University as an associate professor. According to the university, she will begin her teaching career in November. This was reported by Cointelegraph.com reports .

Although Peirce's term at the SEC officially ended in June 2025, regulations allow commissioners to continue serving for up to 18 months until a successor is appointed. She joined the agency in 2018 during the Donald Trump administration and was reconfirmed for a second term in 2020.

Hester Peirce is expected to help strengthen the academic foundation at the law school in areas such as federal litigation, securities regulation, and digital assets. With her departure, only two Republican commissioners will remain at the SEC: Mark Uyeda and Chair Paul Atkins.

Since Donald Trump took office in January 2025, the SEC has fundamentally shifted its approach to regulating the crypto industry. The agency has halted investigations and enforcement actions against several crypto companies. Efforts are currently underway to end the "regulator war" between the SEC and the CFTC and to manage the industry in a coordinated manner.

The CLARITY Act, currently under consideration in the U.S. Congress, proposes transferring a significant portion of crypto market oversight authority from the SEC to the CFTC. Meanwhile, both agencies are facing a shortage of commissioners, as many positions remain vacant.
