What Happens During the First Week of Pregnancy

What happens in the 1st week of pregnancy?

For women planning to have a child, understanding the processes that occur in the body during pregnancy is considered important. Specifically, recognizing the conditions during the initial days of pregnancy and the differences between obstetric and embryonic periods can be beneficial.

In medical practice, the duration of pregnancy is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. This is because determining the exact day ovulation begins is difficult. Therefore, the 1st week of pregnancy is typically considered theoretical — during this time, the body is not yet pregnant but is starting to prepare for pregnancy.

Ovulation usually occurs on days 12–14 of a woman’s cycle. A mature egg cell, ready for fertilization, is released from the follicle. However, since every woman’s body is unique, ovulation can occur as early as days 7–8 or as late as days 20–21 in some cases.

As a result, the first week of pregnancy is one of the most uncertain yet most critical periods. During this time, a woman’s body physiologically prepares for pregnancy, but the embryo has not yet formed.

Additionally, during this period, expectant mothers should focus on abandoning harmful habits and paying attention to essential vitamins and a balanced diet for the health of both themselves and their future child. This is the first step towards a healthy pregnancy.
