Heavy rains expected, risk of flash floods and flooding rises

Uzbekistan is bracing for severe weather from April 28 to May 4, with heavy rains expected to trigger a high risk of flash floods and mudslides across the country. The warning specifically targets foothill and mountainous regions in provinces such as Tashkent, Samarkand, and the Fergana Valley, where rapid water runoff could damage infrastructure and disrupt transportation. Beyond rural areas, urban centers may also face localized flooding and street water accumulation due to the intensity of the downpours. Consequently, Uzhydromet has urged residents, travelers, and drivers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant throughout this period.
Severe weather is expected in Uzbekistan from April 28 to May 4. According to experts, as the rains intensify, the risk of mudflows and flooding will increase across the country, especially in foothill and mountainous areas.
In particular, the likelihood of natural disasters is assessed as high in a number of districts in Kashkadaryo, Surxondaryo, Samarqand, Navoiy, Jizzax, Tashkent, Namangan, Fergana and Andijan regions. In some areas, heavy downpours may cause mudflows, rising water levels and even local flooding.
In particular:
- Kashkadaryo region: in Yakkabog‘, Dehqonobod, Chiroqchi, Kitob, Shahrisabz, Qamashi, Gʻuzor districts;
- Surxondaryo region: in Sariosiyo, Uzun, Oltinsoy, Denov, Boysun, Sherobod, Shoʻrchi, Qumqoʻrgʻon, Muzrobot districts;
- Samarqand region: in Urgut, Samarqand, Bulungʻur, Nurobod, Qoʻshrabot, Kattaqoʻrgʻon, Payariq, Jomboy, Ishtixon districts;
- Navoiy region: in Xatirchi, Navbahor, Nurota, Konimex, Karmana districts;
- Jizzax region: in Zomin, Baxmal, Gʻallaorol, Sharof Rashidov, Forish, Yangiobod districts;
- Tashkent region: in Ohangaron, Boʻstonliq, Parkent, Piskent, Oʻrtachirchiq, Yuqorichirchiq districts and in the cities of Angren and Olmaliq;
- Namangan region: in Pop, Kosonsoy, Chortoq, Chust, Namangan, Yangiqoʻrgʻon districts;
- Fergana region: in Soʻx, Shohimardon, Fergana, Beshariq districts;
- Andijan region: mudflow and flooding events may occur in Andijan, Asaka, Jalaquduq, Qoʻrgʻontepa, Paxtaobod, Izboskan, Xoʻjaobod, Marhamat districts and in the city of Xonabod.
Meteorologists say that water flows, especially in mountainous areas, form rapidly and can reach dangerous levels in a short time. This may make travel difficult and increase the likelihood of damage to infrastructure in some areas.
At the same time, the accumulation of rainwater may also be observed in low-lying and urban areas. This situation may lead to street flooding in some places.
Uzgidromet is calling on the public to be cautious. Residents of mountainous areas, vacationers and drivers are especially advised to take safety measures in advance.
In short, nature is once again changing its “plans.” So vigilance is the best protection in these days.
