Shocking assassination
On October 26, at around 01:40, Komil Allamjonov and his driver were driving home in a Range Rover when two unknown assailants opened fire on Ifor Street in the Kibray district. No one was injured in the assassination attempt.
The Prosecutor General's Office issued an official statement the next day, announcing the arrest of two suspects. After that, no further details were released on the case.
Komil Allamjonov worked as the press secretary of the President of Uzbekistan and as a person responsible for information policy in the presidential administration. He was one of the high-ranking officials in the administration of Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Before the assassination attempt, Allamjonov had resigned and said that he would continue his work in the private sector.
The assassination attempt on him was unprecedented in modern Uzbek politics, and no official reports of an attempt to kill a current or former official have been made so far.
On October 27, it was announced that the first suspect had been detained. The Prosecutor General's Office announced in a statement on November 25 that seven people had been arrested, but only one of them was identified: Javlon Yunusov, who was extradited from South Korea. The statement said another suspect had been arrested in Kazakhstan.
In November, a number of senior officials in the State Security Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs were dismissed, including the head of the State Security Service, Abdusalom Azizov, and the first deputy head of the Tashkent city police department, Doniyor Tashkhodjaev. According to sources, these dismissals were related to the ongoing investigation into the Allamjonov assassination attempt. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
