Stabbing in the middle of the market

On July 16, 2025, a horrifying incident occurred in the Shurchi district of Surkhandarya region, shocking internet users across the country. At the central dehqon market in Shurchi — a place where hundreds of people gather daily — five individuals stabbed a man to death in front of his wife.

The victim of this tragedy was Elbek Eshmatov, who was killed during his routine work at the market. In a video appeal circulating on social media, the victim’s wife tearfully described what she witnessed with her own eyes. According to her, the killers had planned the attack in advance and had repeatedly issued verbal threats.

The widow stated that they had reported these threats to the appropriate law enforcement bodies, but shockingly received a negligent response: “If there’s a death, then we’ll take action.”

Two suspects — Ulug‘bek Buriyev and his associate Karim — have been arrested. A criminal case has been opened under Article 97 of the Criminal Code (intentional murder), and the investigation is under the control of the Surkhandarya regional prosecutor’s office. Investigations are ongoing regarding three other suspects — Dilfuza, Ozodbek, and others.

On the day of the tragedy, the market was crowded. Eyewitnesses said the attackers approached the victim in a narrow area and stabbed him multiple times. Some witnesses recorded the scene on their phones and shared it on social media.

The victim’s wife has been left alone with four children. Her psychological state is severe, the family’s financial situation unstable, and the children’s future uncertain. Her appeal had a strong impact on the public. Many citizens are criticizing law enforcement for their negligence and delayed response.

There is growing concern among local residents. The fact that such an attack occurred in a public space highlights serious shortcomings in ensuring security.

This incident clearly demonstrates the consequences of law enforcement ignoring threats. Preventive measures must be taken before a crime occurs — not just afterward.
