Uzbek sentenced for war crimes by Russia

In Uzbekistan, a court has sentenced a mercenary who fought for Russia in the war against Ukraine. He had previously been convicted in Russia for a drug-related case and sentenced to 10 years, later being recruited in prison.

According to court documents, 25-year-old M.K. went to Russia in 2021 to find work. In February 2022, his relative offered him “easy” work with good pay, and they traveled from Moscow to Tula.

Along the way, police conducted a search and found heroin on his relative. M.K. says nothing was found on him, but he was still found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

While in the colony, he was repeatedly offered to join combat, with promises of 1.8 million rubles and Russian citizenship. In October 2024, he signed a contract with Russia’s Ministry of Defense.

In January 2025, he was wounded by a grenade fragment near Toretsk, Donetsk region.

A few days later, during transfer to another hospital, he escaped, reached Moscow, and went to the Uzbek Embassy for help.

Upon returning home, he voluntarily approached the police and admitted to participating in the war.

The Kattakurgan district court found him guilty under Article 154, Part 1 of Uzbekistan’s Criminal Code and sentenced him to 4 years of restricted freedom.
