In the Bostanlyk district of Tashkent region, during an operational and joint operation, an attempt to illegally export 8 live golden eagles from Uzbekistan was detected. This was reported by the regional customs department.
It was reported that, during the operation conducted in cooperation with the Anti-Smuggling Department, the State Security Service, and Border Troops servicemen, a person previously under surveillance was stopped at the “Oktoш” checkpoint while attempting to illegally cross the state border.
During an inspection of the suspect’s bag in the prescribed manner and in the presence of witnesses, 8 live golden eagles were discovered and documented. It was found that the person attempting to secretly transport the birds had treated them cruelly: their eyes and legs were bound, wings taped, and they were tightly packed into a narrow bag.
These eagles are included in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and have now been handed over to the Tashkent Zoo. Investigative and inspection measures are being carried out by the customs authorities regarding the incident.
This incident once again highlights the importance of combating illegal wildlife trade and smuggling, and underscores the need to protect nature and valuable living organisms.
