On January 1, a train hit a Cobalt car in Shovot district, Khorezm region. According to the regional Department of Internal Affairs, the incident occurred at the 21st kilometer of the local 91-02 highway. Footage shared on social media shows the locomotive sounded its horn as it approached the crossing, but the driver of the black Cobalt stopped, then continued and drove onto the tracks.
"The driver of a Cobalt vehicle, born in 1995, was traveling on the Shovot–Urgench route and, at an unguarded railway crossing, failed to comply with traffic rules and road signs, did not yield to the train, and proceeded on a prohibitory red traffic light signal, resulting in a collision and a road traffic accident," the Department said.
According to the Department, the car was seriously damaged in the crash, and the driver was hospitalized with injuries.
The incident reportedly occurred due to a violation of traffic rules, and its negative consequences are drawing renewed public attention to safety issues. An investigation is ongoing.
