Former Roma striker Walter Casaroli supports the candidacy of Gian Piero Gasperini, whom Claudio Ranieri is recommending for the position of head coach. In an interview with the Italian press, the specialist also spoke about the situation at Roma, and in particular Eldor Shomurodov.

- In the early 1970s, you played with Claudio Ranieri in the youth and senior teams of Roma. Were you impressed by his coaching career?
- No, because I knew that Claudio was always a person who approached his work with responsibility. During his career in Italy and abroad, he developed his professional qualities and even managed to win the English Premier League.

- His coaching career will end next summer. Wouldn't it be a shame to retire him, given the results he has achieved?
- Ranieri actually ended his coaching career last year after Cagliari were relegated. However, he only returned to coaching for Roma. His goal was to save the team from difficulties that had been mired in problems this season. He will end his coaching career again in June. However, if he continues to work as a head coach, he can be of great help to Roma.

- Who would you like to see in the future at the helm of the team?
- I would not object to Gasperini's candidacy. He has already announced that he will not extend his contract with Atalanta, where he has worked for a long time and has achieved high results. True, he has previously failed at big clubs such as Milan and Inter. But now he has improved his skills and experience in all areas.

- At Roma, you played as a striker. Based on this, what do you think about Eldor Shomurodov, who has recently gained more playing experience in the current team?
- I consider Shomurodov to be an underrated player. I really like this striker. Eldor can play well with both feet, plays well in the "second floor", has good technique and is a fast player.

- What has changed at Roma since Ranieri came?
- I think the players' game has changed. Ranieri has raised their value. Before, many people said that Angelinho and Celik were not up to the task. But Ranieri has shown that they are good players. Previously, some players did not have enough opportunities to demonstrate their level.
