Rome derby, Eldor's impact and Ranieri's “problematic” choices

Rome derby, Eldor's impact and Ranieri's “problematic” choices
In Serie A's Matchday 32, the Rome derby was held at the “Olimpico” stadium with “Lazio” as the host. Both teams are fighting for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

In the 47th minute, Romagnoli scored the opener. In the 59th minute, Eldor Shomurodov came on. In the 69th minute, Matías Soulé equalized.

In the remaining minutes, neither side could break the deadlock. The match ended 1–1. “Roma” extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches. However, the two lost points reduced Ranieri’s side’s chances of making it to the Champions League.

After the match, head coach Claudio Ranieri spoke about why he doesn't start Shomurodov and Dovbyk together:

“After the Juventus game, I was asked the same question. Yes, I know very well — when Eldor and Artem play together, we become a dangerous team for opponents. They complement each other.

But I must consider one thing: if I need to make tactical changes during the match, I won’t have another striker on the bench. That’s the biggest issue.

Every week after training, I tell myself: this time Eldor will start. But later I change my mind. Because if something happens during the game, I won’t have options.

But when Eldor comes on, the team comes alive. He plays with passion. Artem also feels more freedom up front. This duo is effective, but I must choose the most sensible option.”

This season, Shomurodov was close to leaving “Roma” twice. However, in the decisive stages, he became a key figure for Ranieri’s team. The club offered him a new contract. He will now stay in Rome until 2027.
