Riots ahead of Rome derby: Lazio and Roma fans clash
Serious riots broke out in Rome ahead of one of the most intense and passionate clashes in the Italian Serie A - the derby between Lazio and Roma.

According to Rai News 24, the conflict began when about 500 Roma fans (most of whom covered their faces with masks) moved towards the area where Lazio fans were gathered.

Clashes at Cardinal Consalvi Stadium
The confrontation between the fans escalated in Cardinal Consalvi Stadium, located near the Olimpia Stadium. Here:
  • Stones, glass bottles, firecrackers, wrenches were thrown at the police;
  • Some Lazio fans clashed with the police on the Mulvi bridge;
  • A trash can, tables and chairs from nearby cafes were overturned;
  • Several cars were damaged.

Police officers found batons and iron pipes nearby.

Law enforcement agencies took control of the situation
The police used special means to restore order:
  • Water cannons;
  • Tear gas.

According to official data, 13 police officers were injured as a result of the riots.

Derbies should only happen in football
Historical and high-profile clashes like the Rome derby are the true charm of a footballing environment. But such incidents between fans are against the spirit of the sport. Italian police have stepped up security measures and taken control of the stadium area.
