Manchester City head coach Josep Guardiola openly spoke about the possibility of reducing the team’s squad ahead of the new season. According to the Spanish specialist, the number of players in the team is much higher than the optimal standard, and this situation could become a problem.
According to Guardiola, the club currently has 24 outfield players and three goalkeepers. Before the new season, City went to the Club World Cup with exactly these players. Interestingly, since January, the team has signed contracts with 8 new players, which has further increased competition within the squad.
— At the moment, we have too many players in our team, — said Guardiola. — Next season, we cannot rely on 26 or 27 players. If that happens, the number of unused players will increase and this will negatively affect their morale. Therefore, the issue of reducing the squad is becoming urgent.
According to the experienced coach, although a large squad increases competition between players, over several seasons it will be problematic to form a stable lineup and provide all players with playing time. For this reason, City management may negotiate the loan or sale of a number of players.
In the new season, Manchester City plans to compete in the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, and Club World Cup. Therefore, maximum contribution is required from every team member. However, according to Guardiola, only an optimal and balanced squad is the key to achieving high results.
New transfers within the club and high competition mean that the Manchester side is moving towards big goals. The football world continues to watch the new changes at City. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
