Cannavaro: A modern defender must control the entire field

Within the framework of the Uzbekistan Futsal Super Cup, Italian football legend and World Cup champion Fabio Cannavaro took part in a press conference and answered questions from fans and journalists.

At the conference, Cannavaro was asked about the development of the defensive line in modern football and which Italian national team was stronger — the one from his era that became world champions or the current team.

«In my personal opinion, the national team that won the World Cup in 2006 was stronger. Because at that time, in every line, the most skillful, unique players were gathered. We didn’t become champions by accident,» Cannavaro said.

He also emphasized that in modern football, the duties of defenders have expanded significantly:
«Today a defender is not limited to just stopping the opponent with the ball. He must be able to foresee the course of events across the entire field and control them. A defender is now not only playing against the ball but also participating in managing the overall rhythm of the game. This means that his responsibilities and authority have expanded considerably.»

According to Cannavaro, modern football requires defenders not only to be physically strong but also to have tactical thinking, the ability to foresee the flow of the game, and to provide additional advantages to the national team.

Therefore, he stressed that the role of defenders in modern football is increasingly growing, making them one of the most important decisive figures on the field.
