Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov played his first match of the new season yesterday. Safonov did not concede a goal in the match against Rennes, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a 5-0 victory.
Parisian head coach Luis Enrique shared his thoughts on the game. His comments were published on the "Okko Sport" Telegram channel.
When asked, "How do you evaluate Safonov's first game of the season?" Luis Enrique responded: "Today, we played a flawless game. It wasn’t easy for Safonov because he did not have much match practice.
Emotions can sometimes be distracting, but focusing on the task at hand can lead to success. He managed to do that." The coach was also asked about Safonov's future role in the team and his competition with primary goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Enrique said: "Not every player gets an immediate chance, that's natural. But for goalkeepers, such opportunities are even rarer.
Safonov had his chance today. I approach all players impartially; their performance determines whether they play.
Safonov will play, but how much he plays depends on him." Regarding the French Cup, he added: "I can’t comment on that at the moment. But today, he showed himself very well.
His dedication and professionalism were exemplary." For reference, PSG’s main goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier missed the match against Rennes due to health issues.
