Nigeria files official complaint to FIFA against DR Congo

The Nigerian national team has filed an official complaint with FIFA against DR Congo following their loss in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match. It should be noted that the main and extra time of the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with DR Congo prevailing 5-4 in the penalty shootout. According to a report by ESPN, Nigeria's complaint highlights that some DR Congo players—ranging from 6 to 9 individuals—hold dual citizenship. The Nigerians argue that this might violate DR Congo's national laws. Reportedly, these players were born in Europe and, even after relocating back to their ancestral homeland, did not renounce the passports issued in their birthplace. As a result, the match outcome might be subject to review. If DR Congo is disqualified, Nigeria could potentially secure a place in the intercontinental playoff stage.
