Syomin says it's too early to compare Safonov to Yashin

Former head coach of the Russian national team and Moscow's “Lokomotiv” club, Yuri Syomin, shared his thoughts on “PSG” goalkeeper Matvey Safonov's impressive performance in the latest match. The French club claimed the Intercontinental Cup, with Safonov saving four penalty kicks in the post-match shootout.

“Matvey still has a long way to go to be worthy of comparison with the great Lev Yashin. If he plays well and wins trophies, one day we may call him the ‘great Safonov’,” Gazeta.ru quoted Syomin.

Safonov has barely appeared on the field this season. However, injuries to his competitor Chevalier and the latter’s less-than-reliable performances led to the Russian goalkeeper playing in his fourth consecutive match.

In these four games, he managed to keep a clean sheet twice and conceded a total of three goals.
