Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, speaking about the difficult period following the Merseyside championship season, showed the team a clear path out of the crisis. In his opinion, the best example for Liverpool today is Manchester City's recent experience.
It is known that the "citizens" under Josep Guardiola's management experienced a serious decline last fall after winning the championship for four consecutive years. The game's stability was lost, the points were lost. However, the Spanish specialist acknowledged the problem in a timely manner and saw the solution in the renewal of the squad. As a result of decisive steps taken during the winter transfer window, City regained their composure in the second half of the season. However, the points lost in the fall ultimately led to the championship being lost to Liverpool.
Carragher noted that the same situation is currently observed in the Arne Slot team. Liverpool are struggling to accumulate points in the Premier League, and confidence in maintaining the championship title is dwindling day by day.
According to the expert, even the record amount spent in the summer did not solve the problem. Despite the involvement of a number of star players in the attack and defense, the team is unable to find a stable game. Therefore, Carragher calls for increased activity during the winter transfer window.
"City made the right decision last winter. They didn't delay the problem and spent over £180 million to strengthen the squad. This has paid off: the team has improved its results, stayed in the Champions League, and continues to compete for all trophies," said Carragher.
According to him, it was timely winter transfers that pulled Manchester City out of the crisis and returned them to the ranks of favorites.
It's worth noting that last winter, City held one of their biggest transfer campaigns in history, adding Abduqodir Husanov, Umar Marmush, Nico Gonzalez, and Vitor Reis to the squad. A total of €210 million was spent on these acquisitions, exceeding the winter expenses of the remaining 19 Premier League clubs.
Liverpool were also active in the transfer market during the summer: valuable forwards like Florian Wirz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike were brought in, while Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, and Jeremy Frimpong joined the defense. However, the result was not as expected.
Now, the Merseyside club is planning to acquire a central defender and a winger in January. Among the candidates are Mark Guehi and Antoine Semeno.
Jamie Carragher openly states the conclusion: if Liverpool wants to become a team competing for trophies again, the most reliable way out of the crisis is to take decisive steps in winter transfers. The best proof of this is the experience of "Manchester City."
