For the first time in Premier League history, a coach was sacked on New Year’s Day

On January 1, 2026, Chelsea officially announced they had parted ways with their head coach: Enzo Maresca left his position at the London club. This was reported by euro-football.rureports.

According to Opta statisticians, Maresca became the first coach in English Premier League history to be dismissed specifically on New Year’s Day.

Recall that the Premier League was founded in 1992. Over the past 34 years, no manager’s contract had been terminated on January 1. In this regard, Chelsea became the first to make history.

At the end of last year, after a 2–2 draw against Bournemouth, Chelsea fans saw the team off with whistles. The Blues are currently fifth in the Premier League table.
