AFC U-23 Asian Cup: Japan hit Syria for five, Qatar lose to UAE

At the AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, Matchday 1 in Group B delivered a truly “hot” night for fans. Defending champions Japan made their statement again: scoring five unanswered goals against Syria, they mentally “broke” their opponents right in the opening round.

The scoring opened in the 10th minute with Ozeki’s goal. After that, Japan took full control: in the second half Sato struck twice (66th and 75th minutes), and Ishibashi extended the lead in the 87th. Michiwaki then put the finishing touch from the penalty spot (90+3), sealing a 5–0 scoreline.

Japan — Syria 5:0

Goals: Ozeki (10), Sato (66, 75), Ishibashi (87), Michiwaki (90+3, penalty).

The group’s second match was a very tough night for Qatar. As early as the 3rd minute, Al Husayn missed a penalty — and that moment turned out to be a “spoiler” for what followed. The UAE were clinical: Al Memori opened the scoring in the 21st minute, and Ndiaye made it 0–2 in the 37th, leaving Qatar in a difficult position.

Qatar — UAE 0:2

Goals: Al Memori (21), Ndiaye (37).

Missed penalty: Al Husayn (3, Qatar).

Now the intrigue in Group B heats up even more: in the second round Japan and the UAE face each other — a clash that could decide the group leader. Qatar, meanwhile, take on Syria, trying to “revive” their campaign. In short, hold on tight for the next matchday — this group still has plenty of surprises in store.
