Former Celta and Brighton head coach Óscar García reacted sharply to the appointment of 42-year-old Álvaro Arbeloa at Real Madrid. According to García, Arbeloa can only land a role at Real right now through his connection to Mourinho.
García says Arbeloa wants to follow Mourinho’s path, and that is the only reason he could become a coach at Real. Tactically, after watching Arbeloa’s Castilla matches, García stressed that he is not as strong creatively as Xabi Alonso.
García claims Arbeloa is geared more toward working with players who did not remain in Xabi Alonso’s team than toward Alonso staying at the club. He also raised the question of whom the club president will back — Vinícius or Arbeloa.
García believes Real fans know what kind of football to expect, but Arbeloa will need to change the situation and prove himself in a better light.
García’s remarks once again bring complex questions about Real’s new leadership and the club’s future to the forefront.
