One of the most controversial and painful moments in the Africa Cup of Nations final was Brahim Diaz's penalty play in the "panenka" style. Former Moroccan head coach Hervé Renard categorized this decision as an unforgivable mistake and sharply criticized it.
As a reminder, the score was 0-0 in the 90+24th minute of the final match. At that moment, the 11-meter shot, which could have opened the door to victory for Morocco, was entrusted to Diaz. But he didn't hit the ball with a simple, safe shot, but with a delicate and risky technique called "panenka." As a result, he couldn't score - the opportunity went to waste.
Renard's position is very firm: although he acknowledges the player's right to make mistakes, he said he couldn't make such a "show-like" decision at such a decisive moment.
According to him, this situation is not just a blow - it is also a matter of respect for the dreams, hopes, and aspirations of the people who have been running after a great victory for 50 years.
In a comment to Sport.es, Renar stated:
"One can make mistakes in football, but in such a situation, I am absolutely against "panenka." This seems disrespectful to the whole country and the people. I have no sympathy for this."
The former coach recalled experiencing similar situations before. He said that in the Arab Nations Cup match against Morocco, he also failed to score a penalty in the "panenka" style from his player Abdulla al-Hamdan. Renard took the situation very seriously then: he insisted that the player come with him to the press conference after the game and apologize.
The subsequent scene of the final was even more painful for Morocco. In extra time, Senegal used their chance coldly: the only goal was scored, and the trophy went to them - 1:0.
For information, the Africa Cup of Nations final took place on January 18th. Senegal defeated Morocco by a goal in extra time to become champions.
This final proved once again: in big games, even small details determine fate. "Panenka" may look beautiful, but sometimes it turns into a game of the team's and the nation's dream.
