Ugarov: Curaçao and Cape Verde should have played Russia

Former Zenit player Denis Ugarov made an ironic remark about the national teams of Curaçao and Cape Verde reaching the final stage of the 2026 World Cup. He shared his thoughts in an interview with the outlet Euro-Football.Ru. This was reported by euro-football.ru reports .

Ugarov said that before qualifying for the final stage of the World Cup, these teams “should” have taken the field against the Russian national team. In his view, only such matches would show what level they are at, adding that “only the Russian national team” can test this.

Coached by Dick Advocaat, Curaçao will play in Group E at the 2026 World Cup against Germany, Ecuador and Côte d’Ivoire. Cape Verde will compete in Group H against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
