Vice President: The national team's absence from the 2026 World Cup is a "national disgrace"

Italy Senate Vice President Licia Ronzulli described the national team failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup as a “national shame” and called for the resignation of the country’s football management.
It is reported that the Italian national team, in the decisive qualifying match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, missed the opportunity in the penalty shootout (1:1, pen. 1:4) and for the third consecutive time remained outside the World Cup. This result surprised not only the fans but the entire football community.
Ronzulli emphasized: “Italy is failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Despite a great coach like Gattuso and the determination of the Azzurri, the result was like this. We have been hosting the world’s most important tournament for 16 years. This is an unprecedented national disaster! The entire football system needs to be completely reformed. If the leaders of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) feel even a little pride, now is the time to resign.”
Additionally, the senator addressed the federation president Gabriele Gravina personally: “Gravina, after such a disaster, you have only one path — to resign immediately! The end! Italian football deserves much better results.”
It is worth noting that a quarter of a century ago, as four-time World Champions, Italy last participated in the final stage in 2014. Since then, the Italian national team has faced failures in major tournament qualifiers, and this result tests not only pride but also the international prestige of national football.
