Russian insider on Uzbekistan's chances at the World Cup

As the Uzbekistan national team prepares for its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance, opinions on the team's prospects are circulating. Renowned Russian football agent and insider Timur Gurskaya has shared his views on Uzbekistan's outlook for the 2026 World Cup.
It is known that the Uzbekistan national team will face Colombia, Portugal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Group K. Each of these opponents is distinguished by their style, physical conditioning, and international experience. Therefore, every match at the tournament will be a major test for our representatives.
In a discussion on Timur Gurskaya's YouTube channel, the conversation touched upon the potential performance of Uzbekistan striker Eldor Shomurodov at the World Cup. One of the participants speculated that Eldor could score several goals, but Gurskaya approached this prediction with caution.
In his view, the group in which Uzbekistan is placed is very difficult. Alongside strong opponents like Colombia and Portugal, DR Congo could also pose a serious threat. Gurskaya specifically highlighted the Congolese defense, noting that the team often focuses on keeping a clean sheet.
The insider also mentioned that the Congo squad features experienced defenders like Chancel Mbemba. He recalled that the player was once linked to a move to Dynamo Moscow, though the transfer did not materialize. Through this example, Gurskaya aimed to show that the Congo squad possesses high-level talent.
During the interview, he was asked how many goals the Uzbekistan national team might score at the World Cup. Gurskaya gave a cautious answer, suggesting that even one goal in three matches would not be a bad result, while two goals would be considered a very good performance.
Naturally, such forecasts evoke mixed reactions from fans, as the Uzbekistan squad features players like Eldor Shomurodov, Abdukodir Khusanov, and other experienced professionals. Although it is the team's first World Cup, they are expected to compete with dignity rather than just participate.
Currently, the Uzbekistan national team is preparing for the World Cup under the guidance of Italian specialist Fabio Cannavaro. Cannavaro is a legendary figure in football, having won the World Cup with Italy twenty years ago and claiming the Ballon d'Or that same year.
Cannavaro's experience, defensive philosophy, and understanding of the mentality required for major tournaments could be a crucial factor for Uzbekistan. Advancing from the group will not be easy, but with order, discipline, and a clear plan in every match, the team can provide serious resistance.
In short, Timur Gurskaya offered a cautious assessment of Uzbekistan's chances. He considers the group difficult and does not expect a high goal tally. However, the beauty of football lies in the fact that predictions remain on paper, while the pitch reveals the truth. For Uzbekistan, this World Cup is their first major stage, and it is on this stage that an unexpected history could be written.
