Kanchelskis expects a big surprise from Uzbekistan at the World Cup

Former USSR national team player Andrei Kanchelskis shared his thoughts ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He noted that the upcoming tournament might differ from previous ones, as it will feature both traditional giants and national teams that may seem unusual to many.
Kanchelskis believes we will see teams of varying levels at this World Cup. Some squads might not be very familiar to the football community, but this is exactly what adds a unique interest to the tournament, as unexpected results often become the most memorable moments.
The former player also spoke warmly about the Uzbekistan national team. He stated that despite this being their first World Cup appearance, the Uzbek players could provide a pleasant surprise for the fans.
“There will be many unusual and perhaps weaker teams at this World Cup, which is a bit surprising. Nevertheless, we will watch interesting national teams, including Uzbekistan. I think the Uzbeks could deliver a surprise in their debut World Cup,” said Kanchelskis Euro-Football.ru in an interview with the publication.
The 2026 World Cup is of historical significance for the Uzbekistan national team, as our representatives will participate in the world's most prestigious football tournament for the first time. This is the realization of a big dream for both the players and the fans across the country.
The team is currently managed by the famous Italian expert and Ballon d'Or winner Fabio Cannavaro. His experience, knowledge of top-level football, and ability to instill a winning mentality could be a crucial factor for Uzbekistan. Having a figure like Cannavaro in charge also provides the players with great psychological confidence.
Of course, opponents at the World Cup will not be easy. Every match is a separate test, and every mistake can be costly. However, the Uzbekistan national team possesses youthful energy, experienced players, discipline, and high motivation. The debut World Cup is an opportunity for the players to showcase themselves to the whole world.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Due to the expanded tournament format, more national teams have the chance to step onto the big stage, creating an opportunity for new participants like Uzbekistan to write their own history.
In short, Kanchelskis did not hide that he expects more than just participation from Uzbekistan, but a pleasant surprise. These words provide additional confidence for both fans and players. Now the main task is not to succumb to the pressure on the big stage, play their own game, and worthily represent the name of Uzbekistan. The World Cup door has opened; now it is time to write history.
