Chelsea legend and former captain Cesar Azpilicueta has decided to end his professional football career. The 35-year-old defender announced an emotional farewell after a brilliant 20-season journey at top European clubs. The Spanish footballer addressed fans on social media, admitting that while he had mentally prepared for this moment, writing the farewell words was difficult. This is reported by Goal.com reports .
Throughout his career, Azpilicueta represented clubs such as Osasuna, Marseille, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Sevilla. He also made 45 appearances for the Spain national team, participating in several major international tournaments. His most successful years were with Premier League side Chelsea, where he played 508 matches over 11 years, becoming one of the most decorated players in the club's history.
"Today, I want to announce that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years of living my dreams, I believe it is time to turn a new page in my life," the defender wrote in his statement. He expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and staff at all the clubs he played for, emphasizing that representing his country was a great honor.
Affectionately nicknamed "Dave" by Chelsea fans, Azpilicueta won every possible trophy with the club. His collection includes the Champions League, two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Leading the team as captain to Champions League glory in 2021 remains the highlight of his career.
