The latest innovative initiative of the People's Republic of China is being put forward in response to demographic changes. The country's population is aging rapidly, but the labor resources that provide care and services for the elderly are decreasing day by day. In such circumstances, the Chinese government has decided to solve the problem with technical solutions by introducing robotic technologies into the field of elderly care.
According to South China Morning Post, this pilot project was launched by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The main goal is to simplify assistance to the elderly using technology, ease the burden on families, and modernize the infrastructure of the care system.
The project will test robots that can be used at home, in community centers, and in specialized institutions. These robots will not only provide physical help but also assist people with disabilities in daily activities, offer emotional support, apply “smart lifestyle” features, and offer special services for those living with cognitive impairments.
One of the key points is that the project has already attracted great interest from China’s leading tech companies. These companies are currently actively working on developing humanoid robots and expanding their home use.
Companies wishing to participate in the pilot program must meet the following requirements: test at least 200 robots in 200 separate households or apply 20 technological solutions in 20 social institutions or communities. In addition, participants are required to develop service quality assessment systems for robots and establish general industry standards.
China’s demographic indicators confirm the necessity of such an approach. According to official statistics, at the end of 2023, the number of people over 60 in the country exceeded 300 million. Experts predict that by 2035, this number may surpass 400 million.
Such dramatic changes put pressure on the social system and call for the rapid integration of innovative technologies into daily life. The use of robots offers the possibility of providing quality elderly care, ensuring social equity, and compensating for limited human resources.
