According to Engadget, Disney sent an official cease and desist notice to Character.AI. In it, the company stated that Character.AI had illegally used its copyright-protected characters—including from the Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel universes—in chatbots.
Disney emphasized not only the copyright infringement but also that these characters could potentially be involved in inappropriate conversations with young users. The letter stated that in some cases, the chatbots might be “prone to sexual exploitation” and could be dangerous for children, which would seriously damage Disney’s reputation.
The Character.AI platform has previously attracted legal and government scrutiny regarding child safety. In two cases, teenagers discussed suicide on the platform and subsequently ended their lives.
So far, Character.AI has responded to Disney’s demands as follows: “How copyright owners allow use of their intellectual property depends on them, and we respond promptly to their requests. These characters have been removed.”
