Pennsylvania sues Character.AI

The state of Pennsylvania has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI. Officials claim the company violated state medical licensing rules by having its AI chatbot pose as a psychiatrist. This was reported by Techcrunch.com reporting .
In a statement, Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized that citizens have the right to know who or what they are interacting with online. Especially in healthcare, AI tools should not mislead users into believing they are speaking with a licensed physician.
According to court documents, a chatbot named Emilie on the Character.AI platform introduced itself as a licensed psychiatrist and even fabricated a fake medical license number. This was found to be in violation of Pennsylvania's Medical Practice Act.
Character.AI representatives stated that user safety is a priority, noting that every chat includes warnings that information provided by the AI is fictional and should not be relied upon as professional advice.
