Apple to release a cheaper MacBook

Apple is developing a more affordable MacBook. Bloomberg news agency reported this.

This device, with the internal code name J700, is aimed at a broad user audience and is designed for basic tasks. It will be an ideal choice for browsing internet pages, working with office documents, simple multimedia editing, and other tasks that do not require significant resources.

According to insiders, the device is currently in the active testing stage, and has moved to the initial production phase by overseas suppliers. Apple plans to release this more affordable MacBook in the first half of 2026.

To lower the price and implement an aggressive pricing policy, Apple will introduce several engineering solutions not used in its previous MacBook models. According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, the device will be equipped with relatively cheaper components, including a lower-end LCD display compared to premium models.

The screen of this MacBook will be smaller than the current MacBook Air’s 13.6-inch display. Importantly, the device will use a processor developed for the iPhone (possibly the A18 Pro chip).

This marks the first time in MacBook history that a mobile processor will be used instead of the M series chips designed specifically for Mac computers. As Bloomberg notes, internal tests have shown that the iPhone chip performs better than the M1 chip used in MacBooks a few years ago.

Apple previously used iPhone chips in iPads but later switched to M series processors in higher-end models. The new MacBook is expected to be significantly cheaper than one thousand dollars.

The device will cost about $600, allowing it to compete with high-end iPads with Magic Keyboard Folio, as well as affordable laptops running ChromeOS (Chromebooks). Historically, Apple has always focused on the premium segment with high profit margins.

Entering the affordable laptop market with the J700 model will be a new step for the company.
