According to “Android Authority”, a dangerous virus called “Sturnus” is spreading on smartphones running the Android operating system, which can read the content displayed on the screen.
It not only secretly monitors screen information but can also access personal messages in messengers like Telegram and Signal. It has been discovered that the virus can bypass encryption systems and collect passwords and data from banking applications.
Experts say the virus disguises itself as Chrome or other popular apps. It is mainly spread via .apk files downloaded from the internet. Infections have primarily been reported in Central and Southern European countries.
Google has stated that the malicious software was not distributed through the official Play Market and that the Play Protect security system is successfully blocking certain versions of the Sturnus virus.
Additionally, in July 2024, the Unit 42 research team at Palo Alto Networks discovered a cyber-espionage campaign that used a previously unknown malware called Landfall for Android. The attack exploited a zero-day vulnerability in Samsung Galaxy devices.
