Norway will build the world’s first underwater desalination plant, 3dnews.ru reports. The plant will be installed by Flocean near the coast of Mongstad and will operate with a water treatment module at a depth of 300–600 meters.
This method uses very little energy to desalinate water because the ocean’s natural pressure helps push water through membranes. This, in turn, reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
The project called Flocean One is designed to produce 1,000 m³ of clean water per day, but the number of modules can be increased, enabling production of up to 50,000 m³ of water.
Placing desalination units on the seabed helps reduce coastal infrastructure, lower water contamination, and ensure high resilience to weather conditions.
